Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)
Answers to commonly asked questions regarding Zumba
Is there a class for beginners?
There isn’t a class for beginners, as there simply isn’t a need for one. Zumba tracks are designed so people can easily pick up the moves and rhythms as we go along. Like anything new, it may take a few weeks to get used to the dance styles and rhythms, but before you know it, you will be addicted to that Zumba workout and music! Zumba is suitable for all fitness levels, including people new to fitness. You take the workout at your own pace, and can adjust the impact to suit your ability.
What should I wear?
Wear whatever you personally feel comfortable and can be yourself in. Loose fitting clothing is generally best and layers that you can take off as you get warmer are good. Most people wear leggings and t-shirts, or loose fitting trousers.
How will Zumba improve my fitness level?
Zumba will improve your fitness in a number of ways.
Provides a great dynamic core workout – Zumba uses moves that require us to use a great deal of control in the midsection to perform those moves, strengthening abs and back.
A great aerobic exercise – The Zumba program follows aerobic and interval training methods to incorporate high levels of activity, which means we burn calories! It provides long term health benefits to our heart. This will vary from individual to individual depending on fitness level, and intensity to which we work.
Weight Loss – Zumba provides a low impact, fat burning, exercise, which in turn with a sensible, and well-balanced nutrition program, and regular participation, will result in weight loss.
A Positive Self Image and a sculpted body – Zumba classes can reshape all parts of your body, including your upper body, lower body, mid section, heart and mind! Increasing your confidence, and making you look good!
AND the best thing is it’s Exercise in Disguise, so all of this is happening when you don’t even realize it, Zumba is a GREAT way to SWEAT!!
What footwear is suitable?
Although it is tempting to throw on those old trainers you’ve had for the last 10 years, please remember your feet are very valuable to you and you need to protect your joints and ankles from impact.. Therefore I would say if you are able to it is best to invest in a good pair of trainers which will provide some protection from impact and support to your ankles. Trainers with a thinner base and support around the ankle, such as Nike Blazer mid shoes are particularly good for Zumba, since they allow you easily slide as you move.
What can I expect at my first class?
The first thing is to not worry, we are going to have some fun! There is no intimidating atmosphere as there can be at a gym, and no, we are not all clad in small Lycra outfits!!
Like anything new, we always like to worry, are we going to get the steps, what if I can’t do it, what if I look silly?! Zumba is your workout, you do it your own way, there is no right or wrong, and nobody is going to judge you on your ability. As long as you keep moving, however feels right to you, then that is all that matters. We all come together as one big group, moving to the music, and having fun together.
For the first couple of classes you may feel you want to just move your feet/or just your arms, over a couple of weeks you will soon feel very comfortable with the moves, and get a feel for all the different rhythms and dance styles we use. If you have any questions at all regarding the moves, your instructors are always available to go through any moves at the start or end of the class with you, we really don’t mind!
Make sure you make yourself known to your instructor at your first class, so we can have a chat before the class begins. You will be required to complete a Parq fitness form at your first class. This is to ensure that Zumba is the right workout for you and we can understand any medical conditions you may have, to ensure you can work out safely.
To make this process quicker you can download a copy of the Parq form below. Please complete this form and bring it with you to your first Zumba class.
